NYC Adventure Navigating New York City in a Day Interactive Lesson for ELA

Explore New York City through music, film, landmarks, and transit maps! This 3-day ELA, ESL, Humanities, and Social Studies lesson invites students to use the classic 1949 MGM film adaptation of On the Town as a springboard for planning their own one-day adventure through New York City.

Students begin by listening closely to a musical film excerpt, completing a cloze listening activity, and identifying famous NYC landmarks mentioned or shown in the scene. Then they use maps, landmark contact sheets, guided notes, and public transit resources to design a realistic one-day itinerary through the city using walking and public transportation only.

This resource is ideal for a unit on New York City, urban geography, map skills, American musical film, ESL language practice, or middle school humanities.
