10 Everyday Words and Phrases in Greek Mythology Explore Greek Influence

We often use words and phrases from Greek Mythology and do not even realize it! Have you ever said that you were "caught between a rock and a hard place" when you had to make a tough decision? Or, did you ever comment that a friend of yours was so lucky that he seemed to have the Midas touch? If you said yes, you have used an allusion to Greek myth!

Teach Your Students Something New, and Then Have them Collaborate!

In this cooperative learning resource, I have made it easy for you to introduce your students to common allusions to Greek myth. I find this lesson works best as a mini-project spread over a week. Introduce your scholars to a few examples using my colorful shareable (which works well in a 1:1 classroom). Then launch them on a research mission.

This resource comes with the following features:

    • sharable "10 Everyday words and phrases in Greek Mythology" informational text
    • Graphic Organizer for your students' collaborative activity
    • free Kahoot!
    • *Editable Google Docs Versions* - This is useful if you want to tweak the resources to fit your and your students' needs!
    • Standards Alignment Chart (Common Core, TEKS, and VA SOL)
    • It pairs well with a unit in Ancient Greek History or Mythology or if you read Percy Jackson's The Lightning Thief.

Why You Should Use this Resource:

    1. First, I have provided a flexible lesson to teach ten common words and phrases that originate from Greek myth.
    2. Second, I have given many examples from sources that have used the expression.
    3. Third, based on this model, your students can research more information about each allusion in groups and come up with other existing references to Greek mythology (hint: there are more than ten).
